I had a question from a Patron the other day ("Hi, Stephen!") about tools: it's obvious that a self-employed gardener will need to have a fork and a spade, secateurs, and a selection of gloves: a couple of small hand tools - I like the Daisy Grubber, as you all know - and of course a plastic tub-trug bucket thing, and so on: but, he asked, what are the less obvious tools, without which I would not work?
Eye Protection
No-one seems to talk about this much, but it's worth a quick word: when working around plants, especially shrubs, you would be well advised to wear eye protection, if you don't already wear spectacles.
I'm sure you've all heard that lovely, callous, phrase “it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick” and I can tell you that getting poked in the eye is painful, and is a regular occurrence when gardening.
